It was a hack job. Marc was aware of that, but it didn’t really matter, as long as it worked.

Zorge and Maiair had brought in a couple of mechanics who worked under the table for the usual bribes, and they had assembled everything quickly enough, once the last bits of material were picked up from the middlemen.

And the suppliers had been willing to fall for the story about Marc needing to have a full set of spare parts up front. That, or perhaps they had understood that it would be easier to do this the first time given the political climate, rather than trying to order replacements later at a time when that was getting more and more difficult.

He had a full wormhole generator system now. Two of them, in fact. One packed up, back in crates after they had confirmed that everything worked, and the second pair assembled to make a full unit. Power would always be a problem, but an emergency system like this had two backup generators to power it, both topped off with enough fuel to last him a long time if he was careful enough to steal more later.

Marc laughed to himself that one of the tiny machines could probably output more power than the oversized, fusion reactors on either of Sky Patrol’s primary LaGrange bases, despite being small enough to fit in a steamer trunk. But that would be necessary. Once he stepped through a portal and emerged on Earth, this system would destroy itself and nobody would be able to open it again. Or track where he’d gone.

If something went wrong, he’d be stuck on Earth for the rest of his life. Or at least until Constable Grodray found him. Or Gareth. His comrades would become freak-show performers, assuming the xenophobic peasants back home didn’t just kill them out of fear or spite.

Sure, he could easily conquer Earth Force with his new technology, but who wanted to be king of an anthill just outside the walls of Versailles?

“What’s so funny?” Maiair asked as the machine wound down from the latest calibrations tests.

The room wasn’t all that crowded right now. He and the two Warreth females. The two Nari men. A Grace mechanic and his Vratha journeyman. Everyone else was at the far end of the garage space with the equipment, leaving him space.

“Playing out scenarios in my mind,” Marc replied, letting some of the humor remain on his face for her to read. “I imagined all of us trapped on Earth when something went wrong, and having to settle for conquering that whole system for now.”

“The Constables would still chase us, correct?” she asked. “Even there?”

“Even there,” Marc assured her. “I’m sure they have agents in place somehow. Or at least watchers listening in on the radio signals, so they could report back quickly enough if something like us suddenly conquered Earth.”

“You could always turn back into a human, Maximus,” Maiair suggested. “That might let you hide. You’d be one grain of sand on a beach.
